Acordei, fui concluir o postr mais a Maria Hernandez, lavar e secar a roupa, ver as fotos, comer e pimba....ir oara o Julyamsh Couer d' Alene Powwow....que é um lugar onde os índios festejam as suas tradições.
Já tinhamos tido uma reunião com uma senhora que nos explicou como nós deveriamos de nos comportar nessa celebração. Por exemplo, não podemos usar shorts curtos e nao podemos pegar na roupa deles mesmo que esteja caida no chao.Fiquei surpreendida com os acessórios, pois nota-se que dão muito trabalho a fazer. Comprei anéis com missangas, uma pulseira de um material muito pouco usual e um fantache de dedo.
Quando eles começaram a dançar, fomos para a arena. No final, fomos para o Pizza Hut, mas eu preferi esperar para comer em casa..
No final do dia fui para a biblioteca, porque não tinha computador e queria falar com os meus amigos e pais. Eu era a única que não tinha computador com internet.

Sábado...dia 23 de Julho de 2011
Começamos com o challenge course , o nome diz muito não diz? Tivemos de fazer jogos: o rolo de canela, a corrente, o zombie, o "eu gosto de", o hipnotizador, o "eu confio em ti" e acabamos com o mais dificil...todos tinhamos de subir um tronco enorme que tremia e com as duas mãos tinhamos de acertar num pendulo. Ninguém conseguiu, mas levamos sustos na mesma..lol.. a sorte foi que estavamos agarrados por uma corda, mas mesmo assim não me sentia segura, só de olhar para baixo dava-me uma neura..hihi
Depois fomos às compras em Spokane mais as girls, comprei uns brincos em forma de batom, uns em forma de garrafa que dizia "love" e outros em forma de coração na minha loja favorita Claire\s.
Depois , à noite, fomos para um restaurante mexicano a pé. Quando chegamos lá, ficamos com medo de não poder entrar pois algumas de nós tinhamos menos de 21 anos., podemos ficar na zona dos "novatos".
P.S: Achei piada ao facto de o mexicano ter tido custo de me pedir o id..lool. Eu pedi sem alcool , mas mesmo assim o senhor trouxe-me com alcool, mas eu tive de reclamar, porque estava mesmo com sede e não tinha assim tanto dinheiro para tar a beber os dois.
Neste dia havia uma rapariga que fazia anos, por isso deram-nos camarão temperado.lol.
Quando começou o karaoke cantmos "Lady marmalade" e a Steph surpreendeu-me com uma música da Alicia Keys..ela canta mesmo muito bem.

Para começar o dia tivemos aulas com Sean Agriss intituladas Teaching in America onde tivemos a acabar os nossos posters.
Da parte da tarde fomos visitar uma escola rural e a Rebeca, a peer mentor, disse que se nós fizessemos um sinal com o braço, que os motoristas apitavam e então foi o que fizemos, mas tivemos de insistir muito..lool. Também disse que haviam muitas serpentes ondia iamos e inclusive vimos algumas mortas no chão..lool
Quando chegamos lá podemos constatar que , apesar de a escola ser das mais rurais e probres suplantava muitas das de Portugal.
Depois fomos ter uma reunião com refugiados, foi interessante reparar a vontade que as pessoas têm de manter a sua identidade, mesmo estando longe do seu país, para tal tentam conseguir manter a sua língua nas gerações seguintes. Uma senhora espanhola que falou disse que gostava que nós falassemos na radio e foi isso que aconteceu duas semanas depois.
Depois fomos para a casa da Gina, que mais tarde vim a descobrir que nao só era nossoa professora, como era a directora do programa.
Antes de jantar tivemos a ter aulas de Language group, chama-se grupos, porque cada grupo tinha o seu peer mentor, o meu era o Pedro Hernandez, que era mexicano por isso podia falar com ele em espanhol.
Para iniciar começamosa ler um texto e cada um tinha de explicar o que tinha lido, no final ele explicou que nunca usava livros nas suas aulas, porque era aborrecido e que sempre encontrava uma forma de contornar a desmotivaçao na sala de aula. Também tivemos a jogar um jogo em que nos tinhamos de equilibrar em cima de papéis e sempre com as maos dadas.
Quando o jantar estava pronto fomos comer e houve direito a bolo, a Gina é fantástica.

Começamos de novo bem cedinho na universidade de Eastern Washington com Sean Agriss nas aulas de "Teaching in America", onde ,além de outras coisas, estivemos a elaborar posters que consistiam em ir ao encontro das noticias que eram divulgadas no media, quer em jornais, telejornais, revistas, etc.
Fiz um trabalho sobre Summer school, que é um conceito muito mais divulgado na América do em Portugal.
Depois fomos para o One room school house, que é um lugar onde constumavam a dar aulas e que agora serve como museu dentro do campus universitário.
A senhora que nos recebeu começou por explicar que o chapéu branco que se encontrava no início da sala servia para punir quem não tinha feito os trabalhos de casa e que quem tinha inspirado essa ideia foi Dunce, porque ele acreditava que se usasse um chapéu em forma de cone poderia obter as ideias vindas do céu.
Depois ela explicou que a sala constumava estar muito fria lá atrás e muito quente à frente, pois este era o lugar onde se encontrava o forno.
As professoras não podiam ter namorado, tinham de se dedicar 100 por cento ao trabalho e chegava muito cedo e saiam muito tarde da sala. As ditas nem podiam ir comer gelados para o parque, tinham de usar saias muito grandes e usavam uma palmatória na mão.
No fim jogamos um jogo que as crianças costumavam brincar quando estava muito frio lá fora que consistia em esconder um objecto e a pessoa que viesse de fora tinha de descobrir a partir da reacção das pessoas que se encontravam na sala.
Para finalizar o dia, fomos ter aulas de Economia que eram dadas a um curso de Governo com outros estudantes americanos. O que me lembra de concluir com um jogo que fizemos foi que nao se deve confiar em ninguém quando o tema é ...ir para a cadeia.
Para acabar o dia, entramos no autocarro e fomos para Spokane e fiquei supresa com a diversidade de pessoas. Vi muita coisa bonita, mas não comprei muita coisa, talvez mais do que devia.

Na quarta-feira começamos outravz com Teacing in America e fizemos Language assessments para podermos testar os nossos conhecimentos no inglês e no sistema educativo. Este teste foi feito de novo no final do ano, mas sem a entrevista oral.
No final, Gina disse-nos que tinhamos evoluido bastante quer a nível oral, quer a nível escrito e isso foi muito gratificante, porque , apesar de não ter uma nota final, é sempre bom saber que alguém reconhece o nosso trabalho.

1º Acordar as sete e meia para ter aulas as oito e meia com Sean Agriss. As aulas entitulavam-se "Teaching in America" e consistia em falar sobre a educaçao americana e fazer a ponte com o nosso sistema educativo. A sala era disposta em círculo numa tentativa de desfazer a autoridade que é concebida aos professores e que às vezes intimida alguns alunos.
Pelos vistos, o nosso grupo nao estava intimidado, porque uma aula que supostamente deveria demorar três horas teve de se estender para o dobro, mas não no mesmo dia..lool.
Depois fomos conhecer o reitor da universidade que nos acolheu num lugar todo fino e de impor respeito.
Depois das duas as cinco tivemos Language culture in the classroom com Gina. Descobri que em algumas escolhas dão livros de graça a quem quiser, que os refugiados não são bem apoiados, etc, etc.

What is your teaching philosophy up to this point?
Well, this is a very general question so you will have a lot to read....
A lesson given in one classroom will not be the same given in another classroom even if the content is the same and the objectives. Why? Because even though the teacher is the same, the students are different, and the only way that we can satisfy our students is by trying to understand and help them.
I never had to struggle with a culture very different from mine, because I`ve never been in a lot of countries, but I understand that may be difficult for some students to adapt to a really different culture especially if you don`t speak the same language. The students that are able to learn a new language and go far in their studies should be really appreciated. I speak portuguese, but if I take a master degree in portuguese I will be happy, but if I take in american, I will be extra happy, because writing well in a different language can be a huge obstacle.
Now I am more aware of the students that don`t speak the same language that the others students, because before I came here I never had a student that didn`t speak portuguese. Even though I don`t know how to speak , for example, chinese and african, I can help them and they don`t need to be left out just because we don`t speak the same langugage.
In Portgal children start to learn english earlier then american students start learning spanish and that`s a good thing ,because kids tend to learn languages quicker and because a study proved that students that are bilingual tend to have better grades.
I am seriously against discrimination of the other cultures, race, disabilities and socio- economic status, because I think that make this factor a part of the classroom really enrich our days.
Sorry that I disagree with same people, but I really liked the movie "School of life", because showed us that you don`t need to have a lot of experience to be a respected teacher and that you shouldn`t be afraid to take risks in you classroom (as long as you don`t do something harmful). I have to confess that when I was younger I used to represent with my sister and that I asked my teacher from 9th grade if we could make a movie and she accepted, so I am really into acting. For same people acting is going a little far, like Matt Warner from
the movie, but as long as the students like the class and they are learning, why not?
Have you noticed that I like you`re classes? Yeah, too bad today is the last one. The main difference between you`re classes and the other teachers classes is that you truly care about our tastes, necessities and personalities. I think it`s the first time I have difficulties in being sincere in a class, because you really touch our inner soul, you make us think and reflect about our lives.
We can really see that you prepare you`re classes and you try to make them as interesting as possible and the classes aren`t given always in the same place ,because you want us to see movies, represent, play and cry (of laughter,of course).
My conclusion is ...if you want the students to care about you, you should care about them and is not a shame to follow their ideias, this just show that you`re flexible and comfortable enough to , at last minute, make something different and meaningful. Of course, there is a difference between what the students need and what they want, but if we found a balance we will be successful..

English Language Learners and Education
Thinking about our visits to Global Neighborhood, the Refugee Parent's Panel, Jack Anderson at Kennewick Public Schools, Mea Moore at the Professional Educator Standards Board, Jacob's Well, the Salish Language Workshop, and what we've been discussing in our academic classes, what did you discover about how English language learning affects students' capacity to be successful in school? In what ways is this similar to your home country? In what ways is this different than in your home country? As an educator, how do you understand your role in assisting students who are language learners to be successful in school?
Studies say that kids that learn more then one language are more developed and have better grades then the one`s that just know one language.
Even though children are bilingual they see their world trough their first language, so is really important to value their first language and to encourage them to use it.
In my home country, I don`t know any school that gives another language rather then portuguese, english, latin, french and german. For example, once I choose spanish in the seventh grade, but I wasn`t accepted, because they didn`t had a spanish teacher.
In America, 90 percent of the foreigner students speak spanish, so some schools are prepared for that. In some cases, classes are given half in spanish and half in english. I have to admit that I think this idea is a little radical, but if works that`s what matter.
In my island there are some chineses, africans and brazilians, so they should have a teacher that knew how to speak this language. Of course, brazilians speaks portuguese so is easy to understand, but there are some differences.
Like Gina said, when we try to understand other people`s languages, we are trying to understand them and make a connection. When we reject and forbidden students to speak they`re languages we are trying to be superior and are rejecting they`re identity.
To overcame this challenge I would learn some words from the foreigner student , but probably I would need help from a a teacher specialized in the language.

Conflict resolution
A case conference is being held to discuss what should be done Alejandro, a 12 year old student. He is constantly in trouble, skipping classes, not doing homework, being disruptive in class, and so on. Present at the case conference are: principal, Alejandro's teachers, counselor, and a support staff member who interacts on a regular basis with Alejandro. Two educators are arguing about what to do with him. One person wants him suspended; the other says suspensions don't work. Their argument is getting heated.
When Alejandro is away, the class is much 'quieter'. The teacher who wants Alejandro suspended has had enough. He/she feels the school has done everything for him and it's time to focus on the needs of other students. The other person in the argument disagrees. His parents have been in several times, always supportive; Alejandro says he wants to graduate but he has refused counseling. What would you do in this situation if you have the power to decide for Alejandro?
First of all I would talk with his parents so they could give their opinion, because even though I know how my students behave, the parents know more things that help me understand why he act like that. Maybe the student is going trough a parents`s divorce or someone close died.
I also agree that suspension doesn`t work, because they think that`s just a vacation and there are no negative consequences, actually some students don`t understand that by skipping classes they are prejudicing themselves.
One of the solutions would be putting him away from the others students in the same class, but if that didn`t work then he would have to literally have classes out of the class alone, or have a part time job so he understand the utility of school. However it wouldn`t be a work to win money, but a way to make him understand that he have things to win if he work with me. It`s not unfair, because they are disturbing the class and they have really difficulties in understanding the benefits of school.
Finally, even though he don`t want counseling I would talk with him firmly and clearly, but not in a destructive way.
If the problem of the student bad behavior was not liking the colleagues, I would suggest he change school, because is it possible to do it in the middle of the period.

Disability and Education
Thinking about our visits to Domino Preschool, our Assistive Technology Workshops, our various school visits, and what we've been discussing in our academic classes, what did you discover about how disability affects students' capacity to be successful in school? In what ways is this similar to your home country? In what ways is this different than in your home country? As an educator, how do you understand your role in assisting students with a variety of special needs to be successful in school?
There are more obstacles in students success when they have disabilities, therefore is necessary that the country is prepared to adapt the school to their needs.
I have to admit that I was really satisfied with the fact that the Assistive Techology teachers gave us material, because in Portugal the students, for example, with difficulties in listening and see sometimes are very isolated from the others, so with this new software I will be able to help them, even though I am not specialized in disabilities. I was two semesters in the Psychology course, so I am very aware of the social needs the students have. If we have the possibility to include the students with disabilities in our class is beneficial, because kids tend to imitate what they see.
In Portugal, the kids with severe disabilities are treat outside of the class, however the others are inside the class and some explications are done with a specialized teacher inside the classroom.
My role is really important, because they can`t think that they will not reach their objectives, and we should be persistent and have high expectations of all.
The intervention I liked the most in Assistive Technology was from Paul and the mom Dorothy, because they were talking about personal experiences and that touched me. Is fascinating that people that were not professional could do so much, like the father of Paul and the mother Dorothy. That leads to the conclusion that when we care, we can make a difference even if looks impossible sometimes.

In what ways is this similar to your home country? In what ways is this different than in your home country? As an educator, how do you understand your role in assisting students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds to be successful in school?
I understand that students feel uncomfortable when they know they don`t have money, because then they can`t buy books, computers, magazines and start think life is unfair. In both countries this factor interfere with the student`s sucess.
In Portugal there is more cases where the poverty can`t be overcome with the help of the school, because we don`t have a day where the students can pick all the new books they want from the esposition.
We can always help overcome poverty, we just need to be like the principal of Holmes Elementary, because he is so interested and motivated in his work.

How would you as a teacher challenge discrimination in school?
Are you willing to expand your act-space in order to challenge this issue? Would you go against the norms of the institutions/outer forces? knowing the consequences how far would you go?
When I was in elementary school I was discriminated because I was more fat. Seeing this scenario the teacher never did anything to help, maybe because he thought that it wasn`t his business. I believe that the social learning are important, so they should make part of the classroom formal curriculum. The solution could be , for example, give one hour every week to the children talk about what happened in the week and find the best way to overcome the problems. Of course, if the problem was urgent or I presented the act of discrimination I would intervene. The objective of this weekly reunions is to show them that they are safe and they can express what they feel.
I would go against the norms of the institution if I was, for example, in France where they don`t let woman use a scarf in the head. Of course I wouldn`t want to go to prison, because the police don`t let women use the scarf. Actually, I am a very practical person, so in last case, I would just send the massage that I respect other`s people cultures through the hidden curriculum.
I would show them that it doesn`t matter where you from, because to reach you`re dreams you just have to be willing to learn and to work in what you want, sometimes you will need a little luck, but that doesn`t mean that is not possible to decrease discrimination. If we look back in the history, indian and african people were severely discriminated, they couldn`t even go to the same bathroom, sit in the bus, etc. After the speech of Martin Luther King , Jr. "I have a dream...".. a lot of things changed. Even though he was murdered the rights of africans were improved.
If you want to start something big, you have to take risk, do something that never have been done or that few people did, pass trough the barriers of conformism and make a difference...someone is going to remember you in the future.
When I was in elementary school I was discriminated because I was more fat. Seeing this scenario the teacher never did anything to help, maybe because he thought that it wasn`t his business. I believe that the social learning are important, so they should make part of the classroom formal curriculum. The solution could be , for example, give one hour every week to the children talk about what happened in the week and find the best way to overcome the problems. Of course, if the problem was urgent or I presented the act of discrimination I would intervene. The objective of this weekly reunions is to show them that they are safe and they can express what they feel.
I would go against the norms of the institution if I was, for example, in France where they don`t let woman use a scarf in the head. Of course I wouldn`t want to go to prison, because the police don`t let women use the scarf.
